The gel routine in short

Prep and buff, apply a thin base coat and cure, add two thin colour coats curing each for 60 seconds, then seal with a top coat and a final cure. That's the whole process, and it's what gives up to 3 weeks of chip-free, high-shine wear. Gel doesn't stain your natural nails, so there's no special prep beyond a base coat, and it removes cleanly by buffing the top coat and soaking rather than picking.
