What You Need to Tint Your Brows
You'll need a brow tinting kit that contains all the bits and bobs you need to get the job done. These typically include:
Tint developer
Spoolie or mascara brush
A dappen dish or mixing palette
Here at Mylee, we have 2 super eyebrow tinting kits: our classic Brow & Lash Tint Kit, which uses the mixing method, and our Express 2-in-1 Lash & Brow Tint Kit, which requires no mixing (and gets you faster results).
Both of these kits are excellent and produce long-lasting results; your choice just really depends on your preferred application method.
We'll talk you through both techniques below...
How to Tint Your Eyebrows Using the Mix Formula
Step 1: Cleanse your eyebrows thoroughly using a non-oily cleanser to ensure the area is completely oil and makeup-free. and pat dry. Ensure your hair is pulled back off your face. Step 2: Apply a moisture barrier around your eyebrows and on your upper eyelids using petroleum jelly. Vaseline works well. Step 3: Prepare your tint mixture. Start by squeezing 1cm of the tint into the dappen dish, then add the tint activator drop by drop until you have a creamy, spreadable consistency – probably about three drops. Mix well and stir into a smooth paste. Step 4: Apply the tint to your brows using a spoolie or mascara wand, ensuring every little hair is covered. Step 5: Leave the tint on your brows for 5 - 10 minutes, depending on how dark you want your brows to be. The longer you wait before removing the tint, the darker the finished result, but the colour will stop developing after 15 minutes. Remember that the first brow you applied the tint to has had a little longer, so give the second one an extra minute or so before removing the mixture. Step 6: Remove the mixture with a damp cotton wipe. Et voila, behold your beautiful new brows! |
How to Tint Your Eyebrows Using the No-Mix Formula
Step 1: Cleanse your brows using a non-oily cleanser and pat dry. Step 2: Apply a moisture barrier using petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) around your eyebrows and on your upper eyelids. Step 3: Squeeze approximately 1cm of the tint on a tray or in a dappen dish. Use the angled brow side of the Dual-Ended Tinting Brush and apply the tint to your eyebrows. Leave for 2 - 4 minutes. Step 4: Use a dry cotton pad to gently – but thoroughly – remove the tint of the brow hairs without touching the skin. Wait a few minutes for your skin and hair to dry completely. During this time, you can clean off your brush. Step 5: Apply the Express Developer Gel using the clean brow brush and leave for 1 - 2 minutes. Step 6: Wipe your brows using a damp cotton pad, and you're done! |
How Long Does Eyebrow Tint Last?
Tints fade slowly and almost imperceptibly over time. Various factors can affect the longevity of your tint – exposure to the sun, how much you wash your face, etc. – but we usually expect it to last about six weeks.
How Do You Make Eyebrow Tint Last Longer?
There are a few things you can do to make your eyebrow tint last longer…
#1 Pat Your Face Dry After Washing
First, be gentle with your brows and avoid rubbing or scrubbing the area too vigorously. This is especially important when you wash your face or go for a shower.
Instead of wiping your face dry, gently pat your skin and brows dry (ideally with a microfibre face towel). Not only will this help your tinted brows stay put, but it will also be better for your skin.
#2 Use a Gentle Face Wash
The face wash you use can also make a difference. Look for gentle, non-abrasive cleansers that won't strip the tint from your brows.
Also, avoid using any oil-based products around your eyebrows, as they can cause the tint to fade faster.
#3 Use Less Brow Makeup
We also recommend using less brow products, like gels or pomades, on top of your tinted brows. These products can cause the tint to rub off and shorten its lifespan.
Plus, your brows are already tinted, so you won't need as much product to fill them in!
But we know many of these things are easier said than done, and your brow tint will eventually fade.
What Happens If You Leave Eyebrow Tint On Too Long?
Many people question whether leaving your brow tint on for longer will result in a darker, longer-lasting tint. However, this is not the case.
In fact, leaving your eyebrow tint on for too long can have negative effects.
First off, the tint will only develop to a certain point and then stop, no matter how long you leave it on. This means that you'll not achieve a darker tint by leaving it on longer; instead, you risk over-processing and damaging your brows or causing irritation.
Additionally, leaving the tint on for too long can lead to an uneven or patchy result.
It's important to follow the recommended time guidelines provided – they're guidelines for a reason!
Summary: Achieving Fuller, Thicker Brows At Home
Tinting your brows at home really can make a huge difference in your overall look, giving you fuller and thicker brows without the need for brow pencils or gels (which will also cut down on your makeup routine time).
You can save yourself a pretty penny by doing it yourself at home, but it's important to follow the right steps as we've outlined above to ensure the best results.

FAQs
What colour brow tint should I choose?
It’s up to you! We reckon one shade darker than the colour of your hair is about right. But if the idea of extra bold brows appeals, you could go darker.
How long do you leave eyebrow tint on for?
It depends on the tint you're using, but for our tint kits, you should stick to these timings...
Mylee Brow & Lash Tint = 3 - 5 minutes (maximum of 15 minutes, which is when the colour will stop developing)
Mylee Express 2-in-1 Lash & Brow Tint = 2 - 4 minutes, and 1 -2 minutes for the Express Developer Gel
Can you use hair dye on eyebrows?
We wouldn't recommend it. Hair dye is not specifically made for use on eyebrows and can cause irritation or even damage to the delicate skin and hair follicles. It's best to stick to eyebrow dyes specifically made for the area.
Does eyebrow tint fade?
No matter how good the tint, it's normal for it to gradually fade over time. Things like washing your face, exfoliating, and exposure to sunlight can all contribute to the tint fading. On average, eyebrow tint can last 4-6 weeks before needing a touch-up.
