Yes, always start with a base coat, or a layer of clear Builder Gel if your nails need extra strength. Unlike regular polishes, gel doesn't really stain the natural nail - the base coat is there to help your colour adhere properly, protecting the nail plate and giving you chip-free wear for up to 3 weeks.

Why do dark blue gel polishes sometimes wrinkle or bubble?

Dark blues contain heavy pigments that absorb light quickly. If the polish is painted on too thickly, the LED light can't reach the bottom of the layer, causing the wet gel underneath to buckle and wrinkle. Apply the polish in thin, even layers and cure each coat for the full 60 seconds.
